Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics)

Root canal treatment is an advanced endodontic procedure performed when the nerve and blood vessel tissue (pulp) inside the tooth becomes inflamed or permanently damaged. Deep decay, cracks, trauma, or long-standing untreated infections can harm the pulp. If left untreated, this condition may lead to severe pain, abscess formation, bone loss, and eventually tooth loss.

Modern endodontic techniques—such as high-resolution radiographic imaging, rotary file systems, and biocompatible filling materials—significantly increase both the success and comfort of the procedure. When properly performed, a root canal treatment allows the tooth to remain healthy and functional for many years.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does root canal treatment hurt?

No. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so no pain is felt during treatment. Mild sensitivity may occur for a few days afterward, but this is normal and gradually subsides.

How long does the treatment take?

If there is no infection, the treatment can be completed in a single session.
If there is inflammation, abscess, or widespread infection at the root tip, medication may be placed inside the canals and the treatment may be completed over two sessions.

Is a dental crown necessary after a root canal?

For front teeth, a filling is usually sufficient.
For back teeth, due to stronger chewing forces, placing a dental crown after root canal treatment is recommended to strengthen and protect the tooth.

Can root canal treatment fail?

Although rare, failure may occur in situations such as:

  • Bacteria remaining inside the canal
  • Incomplete canal filling
  • Reinfection of the tooth

In such cases, retreatment (a second root canal procedure) can be performed to save the tooth.

Advantages of Root Canal Treatment

  • Preserves the natural tooth and eliminates the need for extraction
  • Prevents the spread of infection and relieves pain
  • Maintains chewing function and aesthetic appearance
  • Reduces the need for advanced procedures such as implants or bridges in the long term
  • Provides an economical and preventive treatment option

Duration and Comfort

Root canal treatment is completed in one or two sessions, depending on the condition of the tooth. The procedure is entirely painless due to local anesthesia. A mild pressing sensation for a few days after treatment is considered normal.

Most patients can return to their daily routine immediately after the procedure. Regular check-ups and proper oral hygiene help ensure long-term success.
